EMSA launches procurement procedure for new oil spill recovery vessels

11.04.2019

In order to enhance its response capacity network EMSA announced the launch of a procurement procedure to contract new stand-by oil spill recovery vessels in the Adriatic Sea, West Mediterranean Sea, and Central Mediterranean Sea.

In particular, EMSA provides additional response capacity to that of the pollution response mechanisms of EU Member States via contractual arrangements with private or public companies/consortia. Such companies/consortia can be drawn from any relevant industry including shipowners/operators and the spill response service providers.

The contracted vessels would carry out normal commercial activities and, at request, be transformed and mobilised at short notice for at-sea oil recovery services during an oil spill.

Moreover, the Agency informed that it would like to use vessels that are engaged in economic activities, during the contract period, in the identified area, by establishing service contracts for their availability during an incident for spill response activities.

After a request for assistance, such ships would be transformed into oil recovery vessels and made available at short notice for at sea oil recovery activities during an oil spill.
